Z-Corp Spectrum Z510 3D Printer
Last week, we told you about NextFab Studio’s Trotec Speedy 500 laser cutter and engraver. This week, we profile another piece of kit: the Z-Corp’s flagship 3D printer, the Spectrum Z510, which can be used to create high resolution, full color 3D models from digital files.
What kinds of projects can our members create with the Spectrum Z510? The possibilities are limitless, but here are a few examples.

The Spectrum Z510 can be used to create 24-bit color architectural models like this one with unparalleled detail and a large build size of 10″ x 14″ x 8″. Not only that, but with a speed of two layers per minute, it does so much faster than most 3D modeling systems.

Product developers use the Z510 to cheaply prototype new objects and share their prototypes with collaborators in remote locations. According to Cadalyst, Reebok uses the Z510 at its Canton, Massachusetts headquarters to test out components such as outsoles. Before holding teleconferences about new products, the company will use the Z510 to produce a prototype in each meeting location, so that all participants have an identical object to discuss.
Artists and hobbyists can use the Z510 to build models of all kinds. If you’re truly ambitious, you could even use it to create models for your very own 3D zoetrope, like this one created by Pixar for their recent retrospective touring exhibition:
[...] in a woodshop before and built some larger items. I think it’d be fun to try either the 3d printer or do something with the CNC milling machine. It would be fun even just to learn to use the [...]
