A ShopBot is an amazing do-all tool for precisely cutting, carving, drilling or machining all kinds of things from all kinds of materials such as wood, plastics, aluminum and more. At NextFab, we do have a ShopBot and we LOVE it!
It's great for rapid prototyping and production of small parts ready for assembly, as well as for cranking out repetitive parts or large components.
ShopBot Tool, Inc., the maker of the ShopBot regularly holds Camp ShopBot for current and prospective users in different parts of the country and this year NextFab will be the host for the North East region. It's a great opportunity to share the knowledge and meet other fellow users and learn new tricks and tips. If you never had use it before, you'll find out all you need to know to get started.
The highlight of the Camp will be the “Show and Tell”. Bring in something made using their ShopBot, and show-off your skill!
There will also be a discussion on how you might utilize a Shopbot in a business application, and if you are already doing so, you can hear from others how they have been able to keep their doors open in the current economy.
For specific questions, you can always contact the directly.
NextFab will be the host for one of the five nationwide casting calls for Shark Tank, the ABC hit entrepreneurship reality TV series. The first 500 entrepreneurs who show up are guaranteed to be seen by the “Shark Tank” casting team and will get to pitch their products, services or ideas.
You think you've got an idea for the Next Big Thing? Get ready. It’s your chance to pitch it to real VCs (venture capitalists).

Grasshopper is a parametric design software for 2d and 3d modeling that allows you to preserve your design decisions in a structure that allows for rapid iteration, responsive feedback, evolution, and data driven processes. In short, it helps you create flexible geometries through visual coding.
In this two day course, we will cover the basics of Grasshopper, dealing with lists and series, patterns, data structures, reading and writing data, geometric analysis, and visualization. Students will share in the learning experience by pooling the tools they build on Day 2. We will address practical applications like preparing geometry for prototyping and sharing files for collaboration. We will also consider the artistic and unorthodox uses of this powerful software.
Students will be expected to bring a PC laptop with Rhino 5 or the Rhino 5 software evaluation installed as well as the most recent build of Grasshopper. Have a Mac? You could use Parallels for Mac to run Rhino or use a NextFab computer. We want everyone to try. A working knowledge of 3D modeling is recommended. Artists, designers, makers, engineers and coders are all welcome.
The class will be taught by artist and designer Chris Landau. Chris gained experience with Grasshopper both at work at OLIN, a Philadelphia landscape architecture studio, as well as in his own artistic work. Landau's own work explores themes related to City and Cells. His visual vocabulary finds it's way into various traditional and digital media such as printmaking, animation, 3D printing and drawing. Chris did a recent residency with NextFab through the muraLAB project in conjunction with Philadelphia Mural Arts. He has also recently attended Ecology of Strangers, a workshop that was part of the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale to enhance the designed ecologies of the Venice Lagoon.
